Erwan Simon takes water quality samples in Sierra Leone
surfEXPLORE member Erwan Simon takes a water quality sample for the Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation (ASC) program to obtain evidence of marine microplastics in Sierra Leone, at the popular location of Lumley Beach in the capital of Freetown.
As a participant in the Marine Microplastics programme, this sample along with one from the Turtle Islands will be analyzed at the Marine Environmental Research Institute (MERI) for microplastic particles.
Obtaining a count and composition of the particles in the Sierra Leone samples will allow researchers to better understand the sources of microplastic pollution. Results are published in peer-reviewed publications and reported in the national and international press.
ASC will also be using the sample data from all locations to work with our corporate partners to explore solutions to the problem at its source.
